Where Was ITV’s ‘Jericho’ Filmed?

Which UK filming locations appear in ITV’s new period drama ‘Jericho? Set in 1870, this eight-part series takes place in the eponymous Jericho, a fictional shanty town in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s here where we meet the rag-tag community that forms during the construction of the Culverdale viaduct, a fictionalised reimagining of the well-known Ribblehead viaduct.

Thrown together to construct the focal point of their small town, the group must live, thrive and survive while the all-important viaduct is constructed amid the chaos of 18th century life. The show was written by Steve Thompson and features Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson and Mark Addy as part of its ensemble cast.

Yorkshire Filming Locations in ITV’s ‘Jericho’

Filming for ‘Jericho’ took place at numerous locations across the Yorkshire region, with the iconic Yorkshire Dales being cleverly depicted in other parts of the county. Our Production Services team were enlisted to provide location and crew advice during the show’s shoot in Yorkshire. Perhaps the most striking location featured in ‘Jericho’ is the fictional railway viaduct the inhabitants of the town are working tirelessly to construct. Despite being set in the Yorkshire Dales, the Culverdale viaduct was in fact constructed and filmed at a disused quarry in Golcar, near Huddersfield and the shanty town which forms the backdrop for the majority of the show’s action was actually filmed on open farmland in the district of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The production also made use of a period manor located at Netherton near Huddersfield to portray Blackwood House, the home of Charles Blackwood (Daniel Rigby), the visionary behind the viaduct.

The production team for ‘Jericho’ were based at North Light Film Studios, near Huddersfield’s Armitage Bridge. It was here where some of the show’s interior sets were constructed and filmed. Cast and crew did however visit a number of popular tourist destinations in order to capture certain sequences. Whilst watching the show, look out for Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway near Skipton, North Yorkshire which was transformed into the railway line leading to ‘Jericho’.

Hepetonstall in Calderdale, West Yorkshire can also be seen as the village and exterior of Annie Quaintain’s (Jessica Raine) home during the show’s opening scenes. To secure these shots, the production worked closely with Creative England’s Production Liaison Manager for Yorkshire, Chris Hordley, who in turn worked with our Film Partners in Calderdale Council to secure the necessary filming permissions. To create the interior of Annie’s house, the production used the popular attraction of Colne Valley Museum, near Huddersfield.

The Crewing team at Creative England supported both the Art Department and Production Department on ‘Jericho’ to source regional crew by sending out job posts on their behalf and by allowing the production access to their free national crew database. Jobs sourced were across the costume, AD, Camera, Script and Art Department teams. At least nine crew were hired as a direct result of our job posts, creating at least a minimum of 577 days of work for the local crew on our database.
