Pivoting & Diversifying your Business Model:

When so much time and effort (not to mention money) is invested in establishing business models and processes, it can be a very uncomfortable when forced to change. In those situations, our natural reaction is to resist however this can often lead to further difficult situations. Embracing a culture of regular research, feedback and learning is crucial to developing a diverse, flexible business model that allows you to adapt and deliver at the same pace as a changing market.

  • How to regularly test market trends and customer behaviours to identify opportunities

EDITION 4: Collecting Virtual/Augmented Reality & TIBM Works + Programme Highlights
11:00-12:00 GMT /// Wednesday 18 November
The fourth and final edition in this programme will look at collecting artworks, specifically the longevity of an artwork post an initial exhibition run, as well as addressing what is considered when collecting digital works today. The edition will also recap some of the overall programme’s key points and reflections on strategy, curating and longevity in virtual and augmented reality. In this edition, artists will learn:
– About the British Council‘s collection and what is considered when collecting a digital artwork;
– What does it mean to be collected?
– The key points and reflections of the overall professional practice programme;
– Sheffield Doc/fest Arts Programme opportunities;

Part 1 (11:00-11:30 GMT)
Presented by Nicola Heald – Collections Manager / Visual Arts, British Council

Nicola Heald is the Collection Manager at British Council. She leads on the ongoing collection care and conservation strategy of the 8800 plus works in her charge and advises on acquisition policy and visual arts programmes including the loan and installation of works. Whilst at the British Council she advised on visual arts projects within Wider Europe and project managed touring exhibitions within the Western Balkans. She previously worked at Tate.

Presented by Joe Cutts – Curator & Head of Arts Programme, Sheffield Doc/Fest
Joe Cutts joined Sheffield Doc/Fest in 2011. He has been integral to shaping the identity and ethos of Arts Programme, stripping away the trend of modern technologies and aligning them with timeless art forms. He is currently leading on the artistic vision for the festival and year round programmes. Cutts is also a video installation artist and programmer based at S1 Artspace in Sheffield.

The second edition of this programme looked specifically at how curators and commissioners from the Visual Arts sector have welcomed VR and AR into their research, exhibition programmes and year round strategies. In addition, it focused on how their research has led to opportunities and supporting and commissioning artists working in these art forms.

The third edition of this programme looked specifically at how curators and researchers from a festival background have welcomed VR and AR into their exhibition programmes, year round strategies and how they work with arts institutes to demonstrate this also. In this edition, artists learned:

– About the artistic projects of IFFR’s Art Directions programme;
– The value of factoring in the audience when developing and presenting a VR work;
– About the artistic programmes of MUTEK Montréal;
– About how working with a glocal network of festival partners in Covid times and the opportunities that are out there for artists at the moment.

Gavin James- Money, Deals, Business: Film and TV Financing and Distribution

What? Gavin James- Money, Deals, Business: Film and TV Financing and Distribution [90 minutes]

When? Tuesday 19th May at 2pm

In this session, we covered what you can learn from film financing and film profit sharing, from two angles of streamer financing and traditional (independent and studio) film financing.  We also looked into streamer financing of series, traditional financing of TV broadcast series, as well as film distribution agreements and royalty reporting. To finish the session, we looked at what a collection account manager does, why you need one, and what a revenue waterfall looks like, and rounded off the webinar by giving some pointers about how to build a business plan for your enterprise, and maybe what potential investors will look for.

How to pitch – during COVID-19 and beyond. Disruptive Thinking took delegates through effective pitching techniques with guidance on how to articulate their business proposition clearly. Whether you’re pitching for a project or investment over video call, or just trying to succinctly tell somebody what you do, this webinar provided a straightforward structure to follow. They were also joined by Nick Ellis, founder of Halo creative agency for a 30 minute Q&A.
