God’s Own Country was financed by Creative England and BFI, stars Josh O’Connor in his debut leading role and filmed on location in West Yorkshire. It won the World Dramatic competition at its Sundance premiere and went on to win a further 30 awards from numerous nominations, including five BIFA wins and a BAFTA nomination. It became the highest ever grossing independent British debut film released in UK cinemas at $1.2m.
Francis Lee is a writer and director from West Yorkshire who worked extensively in theatre, film and television as an actor before making films. His follow-up feature Ammonite starred Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan.
