Immersive tech sector supported in North East with new partnership

Kingston Upon Hull in East Yorkshire is one of the film location gems of the north of England. UK City of Culture for 2017, the city is steeped in history and has a diverse architectural heritage offering the perfect backdrop for film and TV production.
The city centre and ‘Old Town’ boast excellent period locations ranging from grand Victorian and Edwardian civic buildings to hidden Georgian back-streets and alleyways perfect for period production. Hull also enjoys a unique position on the banks of the rivers Hull and Humber. As one of the oldest ports in England, the city’s waterside heritage is plentiful including smart marinas, old Victorian docks and warehouses.
Earlier this year Hull was chosen as one of the key locations for Ecosse Films’ ‘A Royal Night Out’. The city’s period locations offered the perfect double for 1940s central London.
“A Royal Night Out is set during the VE celebrations of 1945, the film needed locations which could replicate central London at that time,” explains Location Manager, Tom Howard. “Hull had the diversity of streets the film needed from a grand thoroughfare for Piccadilly and tight Victorian alleys for Soho, the interiors of many of the buildings where also scouted, from the grand rooms of the Guildhall to local pubs, of which there are many! I had no expectations of Hull as I had never visited the city before so I was surprised by the diversity.“
It’s not just the locations that make Hull a great place to film, the city has an excellent film friendly reputation. Hull City Council, along with regional tourism partner Visit Hull & East Yorkshire, has been a member of Creative England’s Film Friendly Partnership since 2012. In May 2014 Hull City Council also signed up to Creative England’s Film Friendly Enhanced Partnership Agreement which incorporates a range of activity over the coming year.
“Hull is a fantastic place to film with an excellent range of locations,” says Chris Hordley, Creative England’s Production Liaison Manager for Yorkshire. “I have been working with Hull City Council for a number of years and their film friendly reputation is second to none.”
Cllr Steven Bayes of Hull City Council added, “We are delighted to be working with Creative England around Hull’s filming offer. For those who have not filmed in the city there is a wealth of unique, flexible and quirky places and spaces to film in which will inspire filmmakers to visit the city. And as UK City of Culture 2017 the spotlight is on the city and we warmly welcome film makers and their partners and will do all it can to support those looking to film here.”
