Where was war drama ’71 filmed?

Creative England’s Production Services team were approached early on in the film’s production to source locations which could double for 1971 Belfast and help acquire local crew. The majority of the film was shot in and around Sheffield city centre, Park Hill Estate (also used inThis Is England ’86), Sheffield and Leeds, with additional scenes filmed in Blackburn and Liverpool. The unique aesthetic of Sheffield’s Park Lane Flats and period housing located around Leeds’ Hyde Park area suited the production perfectly.

Our Production Liaison Manager for Yorkshire Chris Hordley was able to accompany director Yann Demange and producer Angus Lamount one recces to Yorkshire in summer 2012, shortly before filming commenced. Creative England also helped to secure crucial filming permission and regional crew to ensure a smooth shoot.

“In Yorkshire, Creative England is the first port of call for crew and locations for the majority of major feature films and ’71 was no exception,” explains Production Liason Manager Chris Hordley. “We showed the producers a range of locations that emulated 1970s Belfast and many of these appear in the film, it just goes to show the variety Yorkshire and the wider north of England can offer to film makers.”

’71 Producer Angus Lamont of Crab Apple Films said, “Creative England were on board from a very early stage providing expert knowledge on crew and locations which helped us decide to base the film in Yorkshire. We secured one of our main locations thanks to the established relationships Creative England have in place with local authorities. It’s great to have this local support available to the industry, it helps a film shoot run more smoothly.”

Creative England’s Film Friendly Partnership members Sheffield City Council and Leeds City Council also supported the production during filming in Yorkshire.

Funding for ’71was funded by Screen Yorkshire through their Yorkshire Content Fund.

Liverpool Film Office provided location support in Liverpool.
